Keys

The car’s keys lock and unlock the car. When a key is within the front part of the passenger compartment, the car can be started.

Available key types are standard key, Key Tag, and Care Key.

The standard key and Care Key are equipped with buttons. Additional keys to the number included as standard can be ordered. For cars equipped with keyless locking and unlocking, a slightly smaller, lighter and button-less key (Key Tag) can be purchased as an accessory.To start the car, a key needs to be within the front part of the passenger compartment.For cars equipped with keyless locking and unlocking, the car can be started as long as a key is in the car.These keys can be linked to different driver profiles to save personal preferences in the car. Care Key is linked to a specific driver profile that is more restricted.

Warning

  • The key contains a button cell battery. Keep new and used batteries out of the reach of children. If someone swallows a battery it may cause serious injury.
  • If damage is discovered, e.g. if the battery cover cannot be closed properly, then the product should not be used. Keep defective products out of the reach of children.

Locking – Pressing the button locks the doors, tailgate and fuel filler flap and also arms the alarm.
A longer press closes all windows as well as the panoramic roof.

Unlocking – Pressing the button unlocks the doors, tailgate and fuel filler flap and also deactivates the alarm.
A longer press opens all windows simultaneously. For example, it can be used to quickly air a hot car.

Tailgate – Unlocks the tailgate only and disarms its alarm. On cars with power operated tailgate, the tailgate is opened automatically when the button is held depressed. The tailgate is also closed with a long press – acoustic warning signals sound.

Panic function – Used to attract attention in an emergency. Press and hold the button for at least 3 seconds or press it twice within 3 seconds to activate the car’s direction indicators and the horn. The function can be turned off with the same button once it has been active for at least 5 seconds. Otherwise the function switches off automatically after 3 minutes.
Warning
If anyone is left in the car, make sure the power windows and panoramic roof are de-energised by always taking the key with you when you leave the car.
Note
A key that has been locked in the car is temporarily deactivated and cannot be used before the car has been unlocked using another valid key.
Button-less key (Key Tag)
A Key Tag can be ordered as an accessory for cars equipped with the keyless locking and unlocking function. Starting as well as keyless locking and unlocking work in the same way as with the standard key. The key is waterproof to a depth of approx. 10 metres (30 feet) for up to 60 minutes. It does not have extending key blade, and the battery cannot be replaced.
Care Key restricted key
A Care Key makes it possible to set a limit for the speed of the car when that particular key is used. The limitation is intended to encourage the car to be driven in a safe manner, e.g. when being loaned out.
If the active key is removed from the car

If the key is removed from the car when the engine is running, the warning message, Car key not foundRemoved from car, is shown in the driver display and an acoustic reminder sounds when the last door is closed.The message disappears when the key is returned to the car, followed by a press of the right-hand keypad’s O button, or when all of the doors have been closed.

Interference
Key functions for keyless starting and keyless locking and unlocking can be disrupted by electromagnetic fields and screening.
Note
Avoid storing the car’s keys close to metal objects or electronics (e.g. mobile phones, tablets, laptops or chargers). Preferably no closer than 10-15 cm (4-6 inches).If there is still interference – use the key’s detachable key blade to unlock. Then place the key in the back-up reader in the tunnel console’s storage compartment to disarm the alarm and allow the car to be started.When the key shall be read by the back-up reader, make sure that the storage compartment is separate from other nearby car keys, metal objects and electronics (e.g. mobile phones, tablets, laptops or chargers). These objects may disrupt the functions.

Locking and unlocking using the key’s buttons

The buttons on the key can be used to lock and unlock all doors and the tailgate simultaneously.

Press the 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (3) button to lock the car.

The driver’s door must be closed in order for the lock sequence to be activated. If any of the other doors or the tailgate is open, then these are not locked and their alarms armed until they are closed. The alarm’s movement detectors are activated when all the doors and the tailgate are closed and locked.

Note
A key that has been locked in the car is temporarily deactivated and cannot be used before the car has been unlocked using another valid key.

Note
If the car has been locked while the tailgate is open, be careful not to leave the key in the cargo area when the tailgate is closed.

Unlocking using the key’s buttons

Press the 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (4) button to unlock the car.

Automatic relocking
If none of the doors or the tailgate is opened within 2 minutes of unlocking, they are locked automatically. This function prevents the car from being left unlocked unintentionally.
If the key is not working
If it is not possible to lock or unlock with the key, the battery may be discharged – in which case, lock or unlock the driver’s door with the detachable key blade.

Settings for unlocking

You can change the setting for unlocking using the button on the key. Either all doors are unlocked with one press on the button, or only the driver door is unlocked with one press on the button and the remaining doors with two presses on the button.

The settings made here also affect central unlocking via opening handles from the inside.

  • Tap on Settings in the centre display’s top view.
  • Press My CarLockingRemote and Interior Unlock.

Select option:

  • All Doors – unlocks all doors simultaneously.
  • Single Door – unlocks the driver’s door. Unlocking all of the doors requires two presses on the key’s unlock button.

Unlocking the tailgate with a key button

There is a button on the key to unlock the tailgate only.

  • Press the key’s 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (5) button.
  • The tailgate is unlocked and can be opened from the outside.
  • The side doors are still locked and the alarm is armed. The lock and alarm indicator on the instrument panel extinguishes in order to show that the entire car is not locked.
  • If the tailgate is not opened within 2 minutes then it is relocked and the alarm is re-armed.

Power operated tailgate

  • Hold the key’s 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (5) button depressed for a couple of seconds.
  • The tailgate is unlocked and opened, while the side doors remain locked and their alarm functions armed.
Note
If the system for the power operated tailgate works continuously for a long time, it is deactivated in order not to overload it. It can be used again after a few minutes.

Locking and unlocking with the detachable key blade

The detachable key blade can be used to unlock one of the car’s doors from the outside – such as if the battery in the key is discharged.

Unlocking with the key blade

Note
When the door is unlocked using the key blade and is then opened, the alarm is triggered. The alarm must be deactivated manually – it may be a good idea to read that section before opening the car.

  • Pull out the front door’s handle on the left-hand side of the car to its end position.The keyhole should now be visible inside the handle.
  • Insert the key.
  • Turn clockwise 45 degrees so that the key is pointing straight back.
  • Turn the key back 45 degrees to its starting position and remove it.

The door can be opened using the handle.

Locking with the key blade

  • The left-hand front door can be locked using the detachable key blade.
  • Other doors have a lock reset on the end face that must be pressed in using the key blade. Then they are mechanically locked against opening from the outside, but can be opened from the inside.

  • Manual locking of the door. Not to be mixed up with child locks.
  • Remove the detachable key blade from the key with buttons.
  • Insert the key blade in the hole for lock reset.
  • Press in the key until it bottoms – approximately 12 mm (0.5 inches).
A The door can be opened from both the outside and the inside.
B The door is blocked against opening from the outside. To return to position A, the inner door handle must be opened.

Note

  • A door’s lock reset only locks that particular door – not all doors simultaneously.
  • A manually locked rear door with enabled child lock cannot be opened from either insider or outside. Unlocking is possible using the buttons on the key, the central locking button, the keyless locking system or by using the Volvo Cars app.

Automatic locking when driving

When the car starts to drive, the doors and tailgate are locked automatically for safety reasons.The doors can still be opened from the inside during automatic locking when driving. Either all doors are unlocked, or just the door being opened, depending on the lock settings.
Note
You will need to use the child lock to prevent a rear door from being opened from inside the car.In the event of a collision, the car unlocks all doors for safety reasons. This only happens if any of the safety systems have deployed.

Setting the max. opening for electrically operated tailgate

Set the amount the tailgate should be opened if the car is, for example, parked in a garage with limited headroom.
To adjust max. opening
Open the tailgate manually – and stop it in the desired opening position.
  • Press and hold 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (16) button on the bottom of the tailgate for approx. 3 seconds.
  • Two acoustic signals sound to indicate that the set position has been saved.
Note
It is not possible to program an opening position lower than half-open tailgate.
Reset max. opening
Open the tailgate manually to the fully open position.
  • Press and hold 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (16) button on the bottom of the tailgate for approx. 3 seconds.
  • Two acoustic signals sound to indicate that the set position has been cleared.

Locking and unlocking from inside the car

The doors and tailgate can be locked and unlocked from inside using the central locking controls in the front doors.

Unlocking using a button in the front door

Press the 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (4) button to unlock all side doors and the tailgate.

Alternative unlocking method

  • Opening handle for alternative unlocking in the side door.
  • Pull the opening handle on one of the side doors and release.
  • Depending on the settings for unlocking, either all doors will be unlocked or only the selected door will be unlocked and opened.

Locking using a button in the front door

  • Press the 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (3) button – both front doors must be closed.
  • All doors and the tailgate are locked.

Unlocking the rear door

  • Pull the opening handle.
  • The rear door is unlocked and opened.

Unlocking the tailgate from the inside of the car

The tailgate can be unlocked from inside the car using a button beside the steering wheel on the instrument panel.

  • Briefly press the 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (16) button on the instrument panel.
  • The tailgate is unlocked and can be opened from the outside.
  • With the power operated tailgate option:
  • Hold the instrument panel’s 2023-Volvo-XC40-Recharge-Plug-in-Hybrid-Locking-and-unlocking-fig-1 (16) button depressed for a couple of seconds.
  • The tailgate is opened.
Note
If the system for the power operated tailgate works continuously for a long time, it is deactivated in order not to overload it. It can be used again after a few minutes.

Private locking

The private locking function restricts access to certain spaces in the car, even if there is access to the key. It allows private storage when the car or its key is handed over in connection with service or valet parking, for example.When private locking is activated, the tailgate cannot be opened, which prevents access to the space below the cargo area floor.

The private locking button is located in the centre display function view. Current status Private Locking Unlocked or Private Locking Locked is shown.

Activating and deactivating private locking

Private locking is activated with a function button in the centre display and an optional PIN code.

Note
The car needs to be in ignition mode I as a minimum for the private locking function to be activated.
Private locking has two codes:
  • A security code is created the first time the function is used.
  • A new PIN code is selected every time the function is activated.

Enter the security code before using for the first timeA security code needs to be selected during the first time the function is used. It can then be used to deactivate private locking if the selected PIN code has been forgotten or lost. The security code acts as a PUK code for all subsequent PIN codes set for the private locking function.

  • Save the security code in a safe place.
  • To create a security code:
  • Press the button for private locking in the function view.
  • A pop-up window is shown.
  • Enter the preferred security code and press Confirm.
  • The security code is saved. The private locking function is now ready for activation.

Activate private locking

  • Press the button for private locking in the function view.
  • A pop-up window is shown.
  • Enter the code to be used in order to unlock the tailgate after locking and tap on Confirm.
  • The tailgate is locked. Confirmation of locking takes place by means of a green indicator being shown by the button in the function view.

Deactivate private locking

  • Press the button for private locking in the function view.
  • A pop-up window is shown.
  • Enter the code that was used for locking and tap on Confirm.
  • The tailgate is unlocked. Confirmation of unlocking takes place by means of the green indicator by the button in the function view extinguishing.
Forgotten PIN code
If the PIN code has been forgotten or the wrong PIN code has been entered more than three times, the security code can be used to deactivate private locking.If the car is unlocked via Volvo On Call, private locking will be automatically deactivated.
Forgotten security code
If the security code has also been forgotten, contact an authorised Volvo dealer for help with deactivating private locking.

Locking and unlocking

The car can be locked and unlocked in several different ways.

The options are:

  • with the key’s buttons
  • using the detachable key blade (if the battery in the key is discharged)
  • keyless (the car detects that a key is within range)
  • from the inside of the car using the locking controls in the doors
  • with the Volvo Cars app
  • remote door unlock (RDU) with Volvo On Call
  • automatic locking when the car is driven.
Note
In the event of a collision, the car unlocks all doors for safety reasons. This only happens if any of the safety systems have deployed.

Activating and deactivating child safety locks

The child safety lock prevents the rear doors from being opened from inside. With electric child safety locks, power window operation from the rear seat is also prevented.The child lock can be either manual or electrical.
Manual child lock

  • Manual child lock. Not to be confused with manual door locks.
  • Use the key’s detachable key blade to turn the knob.
A The door is blocked against opening from the inside.
B The door can be opened from both the outside and the inside.

Note

  • A door’s knob control only blocks that particular door – not both rear doors simultaneously.
  • Cars with an electric child safety lock do not have a manual child lock.
Electric child lock
The electric child lock can be activated and deactivated in all ignition positions above 0. Activation and deactivation can be performed up to 2 minutes after switching off the car, provided that no door is opened.

Rear child safety lock enabled
When the lamp in the button is illuminated, the child safety lock is enabled.

If the child lock is activated when the car is switched off, it will remain activated the next time the car is started.

  • Rear doors cannot be opened from the inside.
  • Rear power windows can only be operated from the driver’s door.
Rear child safety lock deactivated
When the lamp in the button is extinguished, the child safety lock is inactivated.
  • Rear doors can be opened from the inside and power windows operated from the rear seat.

Lock confirmation

The car indicates when it is locked or unlocked. How it is indicated depends on the settings for lock indication and door mirrors.

Exterior indicationLocking

  • The car’s hazard warning flashers indicate locking by flashing and retracting the door mirrors.

Unlocking

  • The car’s hazard warning flashers indicate unlocking by two flashes and extending the door mirrors.

All doors, the tailgate and the bonnet must be closed for the car to indicate that it is locked. If locking takes place with just the driver door closed, locking will take place but the lock indication with hazard warning flashers will only take place when all doors, the tailgate and the bonnet have been closed.

The lock and alarm indicator shows the status of the locking system:

  • A long flash indicates locking.
  • Short flashes indicate that the car is locked.
  • Rapid flashes after disarming the alarm indicate that the alarm has been triggered.

Front door

  • Lock buttons with indicator lamp in the front door.
  • An illuminated indicator lamp in the lock button of either front door indicates that all doors are locked. If any door is opened, the lamp will extinguish in both doors.
Rear door

Other indication
The home safety light and guidance light functions can also be activated when locking and unlocking.Retraction/extension of door mirrors can also be used as an aid to indicate locking/unlocking.

Lock indication setting

You can select how the car shows whether it has been locked or unlocked in the settings menu in the centre display.
Different types of lock response
Tap on Settings in the centre display’s top view.
  • Press My CarLocking.

Press Visible Locking Feedback to select when the car is to give a visible response:

  • Lock
  • Unlock
  • Both

Or switch off the function by selecting Off .

Automatic retraction of rearview mirrors when locking

  • Tap on Settings in the centre display’s top view.
  • Press My CarMirrors and Convenience.
  • Select Fold Mirror When Locked to activate or deactivate the function.
