Air quality

The materials selected for the passenger compartment and the air purification system ensure that the air quality in the passenger compartment is high.

Materials in the passenger compartment

The interior of the passenger compartment is designed to be pleasant and comfortable, even for people with contact allergies and for asthma sufferers. Tested materials have been developed in order to reduce the quantity of dust in the passenger compartment and to contribute to making the passenger compartment easier to keep clean The carpets in both the passenger compartment and the cargo area are removable and easy to remove and clean. Use cleaning agents and car care products recommended by Volvo to clean the interior.

Air purification system

In addition to the passenger compartment filter, the car is equipped with an air purification system that helps to maintain high air quality in the passenger compartment.

Advanced Air Cleaner

(Option/accessory)

Advanced Air Cleaner is a fully-automatic air purifier that collects contaminants in the form of small airborne particulate matter and exhaust gases in the passenger compartment filter, which improves the climate in the passenger compartment. The function is started automatically when the fan is started. Small airborne particulate matter is sometimes called PM2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 µm), the content of such particles in the car is measured by one of the car’s climate sensors. The content in the car is presented in the downloadable Air Quality app.

CleanZone

(Option/accessor)

The CleanZone function checks and indicates whether or not all conditions have been met for good air quality in the passenger compartment If the conditions are not met, the text CleanZone, which is shown in the climate view, is white. When all conditions have been met, this is indicated by the text changing color to blue.

Conditions that need to be met:

  • That all doors and the tailgate are closed.
  • That all side windows and the panoramic roof (Option/accessory) are closed.
  • That the air purification system Interior Air Quality System is (Option/accessory) activated.
  • That the ventilation fan is activated.
  • That the air recirculation is deactivated.
Note
CleanZone does not indicate that the air quality is good. It only indicates that the conditions for good air quality have been met.

Clean Zone Interior Package

(Option/accessor)

Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP) comprises a series of modifications that keep the passenger compartment even clearer from allergy and asthma-inducing substances, among other things.
The following is included:
  • An enhanced fan function means that the fan starts when the car is unlocked with the key. The fan fills the passenger compartment with fresh air. The function starts when required and is disengaged automatically after a time or when one of the passenger compartment doors is opened. The amount of time the fan runs is reduced gradually due to reduced need up until the car is 4 years old.
  • The fully automatic air purification system Interior Air Quality System (IAQS).

Interior Air Quality System

Interior Air Quality System (IAQS) is a fully automatic air purification system that separates gases and particles to reduce the levels of odors and contaminants in the passenger compartment. IAQS is a part of the Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP) and cleans the air in the passenger compartment from contaminants such as particles, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides, and ground-level ozone. If the air quality sensor senses that the outside air is contaminated, the air intake is closed and air recirculation is activated.

The air quality sensor should always be engaged in order to improve the air quality in the passenger compartment. In a cold climate recirculation is limited so as to prevent misting In the event of misting, the defrost functions for the windscreen, side windows and a rear window should be used.

Activating and deactivating the air quality sensor (Option/accessory)

The air quality sensor is part of the fully automatic air purification system Interior Air Quality System (IAQS).
It is possible to set whether the air quality sensor should be activated/deactivated.
  1. Open the climate view in the centre display by tapping on the temperature button at the bottom centre of the centre display
  2. Press . . . in climate view.
  3. Select the desired setting under the Air quality sensor to activate/deactivate the air quality sensor.

Passenger compartment filter

All air entering the car’s passenger compartment is cleaned with a filter.

Replacing the passenger compartment filter

To maintain high climate system performance, the filter must be changed at regular intervals. Follow the Volvo Service Programme for the recommended replacement intervals. If the car is used in a severely contaminated environment, it may be necessary to replace the filter more often.

Note
There are different types of passenger compartment filter. Make sure that the correct filter is fitted.

Air purification

(Option/accessory)Air purification of the car prior to departure is used to improve the air quality in the passenger compartment. Air purification can be started directly from the centre display, but also starts automatically when preconditioning ends.This function uses ventilation to blow fresh air into the passenger compartment and then circulates the air through the air conditioning system’s passenger compartment filter.

Starting and switching off air purification

(Option/accessory)

Air purification improves the air quality in the passenger compartment prior to driving. The function is started directly from the centre display.
  1. Open the climate view in the centre display by tapping on the temperature button at the bottom centre of the centre display
  2. Press Parking.
  3. Tap on Start air purification to start air purification directly.
Note
Air purification (Option/accessory) starts automatically when preconditioning is completed. Windows and doors must be closed for air purification to be possible.

Air Quality app

The Air Quality app is a service that visualizes the measured content of small airborne particulate matter inside and outside the car over time. A climate sensor measures the content of PM2.5 particles (particles smaller than 2.5 µm) in the passenger compartment. The content of contaminants outside the car is measured by an external service and is based on modeled data.
