2021 Polestar 1 Battery

Batteries

Your vehicle has several different batteries to enable electric power and propulsion in various ways. The vehicle has a single-pole electrical system that uses the chassis and engine mount as conductors.

Start battery

The start battery is used to start the electrical system and power electrical equipment in the vehicle. The hybrid battery is used to start the combustion engine.

Hybrid batteries

For electric propulsion, the vehicle is equipped with two hybrid batteries. One is located under the tunnel console and one is located behind the rear seat in the trunk. These are maintenance-free and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Extra 12 V battery

This battery is used for electric power in the front seats so that passengers in the rear seat can exit the vehicle even when no other electrical power sources are available.

NOTE
Contact Polestar Customer Support for assistance with battery replacements.

Battery drain

The electrical functions in the vehicle drain the battery to varying degrees. Avoid using ignition mode II when the engine is switched off. Use ignition mode I instead, as this uses less electrical current.

Note that certain accessories may also drain power from the electrical system. Do not use functions that use a lot of electrical current when the engine is turned off. Examples of such functions are:

  • blower
  • headlights
  • windshield wipers
  • audio system (especially at high volume).

If the starter battery voltage is low, a message is shown in the driver display. The vehicle’s energy-saving function will then turn off or reduce certain functions, such as the blower and/or the audio system.

  • Charge the battery by starting the engine and let it run for at least 15 minutes (driving charges the battery faster than letting the engine idle).

Battery recycling

Start batteries contain lead and must be recycled in an environmentally sound manner at the end of their service life. Consult with Polestar Customer Support if you have any questions or concerns about the disposal of this type of waste.

Battery symbols

There are warning symbols and information on the batteries.
Wear protective goggles.
See the vehicle’s Manual for additional information.
Keep batteries away from children.
Batteries contain corrosive acid.
Avoid smoking, open flames, and/or sparks.
Risk of explosion.
Recycle properly.

Hybrid batteries

For electric propulsion, the vehicle is equipped with two hybrid batteries. One is located under the tunnel console and one is located behind the rear seat in the trunk. These are maintenance-free and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Some parts of the rear hybrid batteries are visible through a clear panel in the trunk. Only authorized workshop personnel may handle hybrid batteries.
NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybrid battery is discharged. If both the start battery and the hybrid battery are discharged, both batteries must be recharged. In this situation, it is not possible to first charge only the hybrid battery. The start battery must have a certain charge level in order for the hybrid battery to be charged.
WARNING

Only a workshop may replace a hybrid battery – contact Polestar Customer Support.

Hybrid battery service life and capacity

The capacity of the hybrid battery decreases with age and use, which could result in increased use of the combustion engine, leading to higher fuel consumption and reduced electric motor range.

Coolant

The hybrid battery’s cooling system has its own expansion tank.

IMPORTANT
The hybrid battery’s coolant should only be refilled by a workshop – contact Polestar Customer Support.

Specifications for hybrid battery

Type: Lithium-ion
Power reserve: 34 kWh.

Replacing the key’s battery

The battery in the key must be replaced when it is discharged.
NOTE
All batteries have a limited service life and must eventually be replaced. The battery’s service life varies depending on how often the vehicle/key is used.
The key battery should be replaced if
  • the information symbol illuminates and the message Vehicle key bat. low is displayed in the instrument panel
  • the locks do not react after several attempts to lock or unlock the vehicle using the key within approx. 20 meters (65 feet) from the vehicle.
NOTE
Move closer to the vehicle and try to unlock it again.

Opening the key and replacing the battery

  • Hold the key with the front side (with the Polestar logo) facing up and move the button on the key ring section to the right. Slide the front cover slightly upward.
The cover will loosen and can be removed from the key.
  • Turn the key over, move the button to the side and slide the rear cover slightly upward.
The cover will loosen and can be removed from the key.

Start battery

The start battery is used to start the electrical system and power electrical equipment in the vehicle. The hybrid battery is used to start the combustion engine. The start battery is a 12 V AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery, dimensioned for regenerative charging and to support the function of the vehicle’s various systems.
  • Never disconnect the start battery while the engine is running.
  • Make sure the cables to the start battery are correctly connected and the clamps are securely tightened.
WARNING
  • Batteries generate hydrogen gas, which is flammable and explosive. A spark caused by an incorrectly connected jumper cable could be enough to make the battery explode.
  • Do not connect the jumper cable to any part of the fuel system or to any moving parts. Avoid touching hot manifolds.
  • Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do not allow battery fluid to contact eyes, skin, fabrics or painted surfaces.
  • If contact occurs, flush the affected area immediately with water. Obtain medical help immediately if eyes are affected.
  • Never expose the battery to open flame or electric spark. Do not smoke near the battery. Failure to follow the instructions for jump starting can lead to injury.

Start battery service life and capacity

The service life of the start battery is affected by several factors, including a number of starts, battery discharges, driving style, driving conditions, climate, etc. The capacity of the start battery reduces gradually over time and the battery, therefore, needs to be charged if it isn’t used for a prolonged period of time or if it is only driven for short distances. Extreme cold further limits start capacity. Many discharges will adversely affect the service life of the start battery. To help keep the start battery in good condition, drive at least 15 minutes per week or connect the battery to a battery charger with automatic maintenance charging. A start battery that is always fully charged maintains its maximum service life.

Location

The start battery is located in the trunk.

WARNING
If the starter battery is disconnected, the function for automatic opening and closing must be reset to function correctly. A reset is required in order for the pinch protection to work.
IMPORTANT
If the battery is secured using a tensioning strap, make sure that the strap is always securely tightened.
