Always disable the auto stop/start system before wading. Failure to do so could cause damage to the vehicle.
The auto stop/start system is designed to improve fuel efficiency. The system automatically activates when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on. Unless it is required to support other vehicle systems, the engine switches off when the vehicle is stationary, e.g., at traffic lights. When the engine stops, it is referred to as an auto stop.
When the brake pedal is released, or a drive gear is selected, the engine automatically restarts. When the engine restarts, it is referred to as an auto start.
The instrument panel displays a status icon to indicate the operational status of the auto stop/start system. See AUTO STOP/START (GREEN).
When activated, the auto stop/start system does not always stop the engine when the vehicle is stationary. The system may also restart the engine before setting off.
Under certain conditions, the auto stop/start system also switches off the engine while the vehicle is moving. See AUTO STOP ON THE MOVE.
To trigger an auto stop, drive forward with Drive (D) or Sport (S) selected, and stop the vehicle. Fully press the brake pedal to make sure the vehicle is stationary.
The following conditions inhibit an auto stop:
The instrument panel displays an information lamp when the vehicle is stationary and the auto stop/start system is active, but operation is inhibited. See AUTO STOP/START INHIBIT (WHITE).
To trigger an auto start, release the brake pedal with Drive (D) or Sport (S) selected.
The engine also restarts if one of the following occurs:
Touch the Vehicle icon on the lower touchscreen in order to display the A OFF icon. See LOWER TOUCHSCREEN CONTROLS.
Touch the A OFF icon to deactivate the auto stop/start system.
The auto stop/start system is automatically deactivated if low range or Hill Descent Control (HDC) is selected. The system is also deactivated if certain terrain response special programs are selected by the driver, or selected by the AUTO driving program.
Touching the A OFF icon disables Electric Vehicle (EV) mode on Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). See ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) MODE.
When the auto stop/start system is deactivated, the instrument panel momentarily displays the message Auto Stop/Start off. A status icon is also displayed. See AUTO STOP/START OFF (WHITE).
The instrument panel displays the message Auto Stop/Start not available if the icon is selected while the system is unable to operate.
The auto stop/start system automatically reactivates the next time the vehicle’s ignition is switched on.
Vehicles with a 48v system are equipped with an auto stop-on-the-move feature. The auto stop on the move feature switches off the engine while the vehicle is moving if:
When the brake pedal is released, the engine automatically restarts.
The operation of the auto stop-on-the-move feature is indicated by a status icon in the instrument panel. See AUTO STOP/START (GREEN).
The auto stop on the move feature is deactivated if auto stop/start is deactivated. See DEACTIVATING AUTO STOP/START.
If the vehicle is left in a driveable condition with the engine running, the driver exit feature does not prevent the vehicle from moving. Make sure the vehicle is not left in a driveable condition, as serious injury or death may occur.
To prevent the vehicle from being inadvertently left in a driveable condition, the vehicle detects when a driver is not present. If this is the case, the system automatically switches off the vehicle’s ignition system. Once the vehicle’s ignition is switched off, the vehicle can be locked, if required. See LOCK CONFIRMATION.
The driver exit feature is only active when:
If Drive (D), Sport (S), or Neutral (N) is selected, the driver exit feature switches the vehicle’s ignition off if both the following conditions exist:
If Park (P) is selected, the driver exit feature switches the vehicle’s ignition off when all the following conditions exist:
The driver exit feature is only active when P is selected. Make sure the vehicle is not left in a driveable condition, as serious injury or death may occur.
The driver exit feature is not active when D, S, or R is selected, but in some cases the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is applied. See ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE (EPB).
If P is selected, the driver exit feature switches off the vehicle’s ignition if all of the following conditions exist:
Once the vehicle’s ignition system is switched off, the vehicle can be locked. See SINGLE LOCKING.
The driver exit feature does not switch off the vehicle’s ignition system if the driver exits the vehicle, and P is not selected.
If Drive (D), Sport (S), or Neutral (N) is selected, the driver exit feature switches the vehicle’s ignition off if both the following conditions exist:
If Park (P) is selected, the driver exit feature switches the vehicle’s ignition off if the driver’s seat belt is unbuckled.
