ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL SAFETY

Make sure the following warnings have been read and fully understood before using adaptive off-road cruise control. Failure to follow the guidance could result in vehicle damage, serious injury, or death.

WARNING
Use extreme care when maneuvering the vehicle in off-road conditions. The driver must maintain full control of the steering and be prepared to use the brakes at all times.
WARNING
Do not allow adaptive off-road cruise control displays to distract the driver while the vehicle is moving.
CAUTION
Do not use the adaptive off-road cruise control to negotiate extreme off-road conditions.

ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL OVERVIEW

WARNING
Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before using adaptive off-road cruise control. See ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL SAFETY.

Adaptive off-road cruise control is an aid to off-road driving. When activated, the system attempts to maintain a constant vehicle speed. The system automatically reduces the vehicle’s speed if more challenging conditions are met. The system automatically raises the vehicle’s speed back to the set speed once the challenges have been successfully negotiated.

NOTES
Adaptive off-road cruise control should only be used to negotiate mild off-road conditions.

Adaptive off-road cruise control provides two modes of operation:

  • Descent control mode. See DESCENT CONTROL MODE.
  • Full function mode. See FULL FUNCTION MODE.

Adaptive off-road cruise control full function mode offers a number of different comfort settings. The selected comfort setting determines the amount of acceleration and braking used when the vehicle is traveling off-road. See COMFORT SETTINGS.

Adaptive off-road cruise control also works in conjunction with the terrain response system. Different acceleration rates are applied based on the selected driving program. For example, the grass gravel snow driving program requires the system to apply gentle vehicle acceleration. The comfort driving program requires the system to apply a greater rate of vehicle acceleration. See TERRAIN RESPONSE OPERATION.

The instrument panel displays warning and information messages to make sure the full benefits of adaptive off-road cruise control are realized.

NOTES
The cruise control, speed limiter, and auto stop/start systems are disabled when adaptive off-road cruise control is operating.

ENABLING ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL

WARNING
Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before using adaptive off-road cruise control. See ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL SAFETY. Adaptive off-road cruise control can be enabled when the vehicle is stationary or moving.

The adaptive off-road cruise control button is located on the center console. The button also controls the operation of the Hill Descent Control (HDC) system. See HILL DESCENT CONTROL (HDC).

The button operates as follows:

  • A first press of the button enables the HDC system.
  • A second press of the button disables the HDC system and enables adaptive off-road cruise control descent control mode. See DESCENT CONTROL MODE.
  • A third press of the button disables adaptive off-road cruise control.

The instrument panel displays an information lamp and message to confirm that adaptive off-road cruise control has been enabled. See ALL TERRAIN PROGRESS CONTROL (ATPC) (GREEN).

DESCENT CONTROL MODE

WARNING
Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before using adaptive off-road cruise control. See ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL SAFETY.

Descent control mode is available when adaptive off-road cruise control is first enabled. Descent control mode attempts to maintain a constant vehicle speed when descending a slope.

To enter descent control mode:

  1. Carefully position the vehicle at the top of a slope.
  2. With the vehicle stationary, press and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Enable adaptive off-road cruise control. See ENABLING ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL.
  4. Select an appropriate terrain response program. See TERRAIN RESPONSE OPERATION.
  5. Select Drive (D).
  6. Release the brake pedal.

Adaptive off-road cruise control takes control of the vehicle’s speed during the descent. The selected terrain response program determines the vehicle’s speed during the descent. The vehicle’s speed can be reduced by moving the SET switch on the right side steering wheel controls downward.

Adaptive off-road cruise suspends descent control mode operation if the accelerator pedal is pressed. Descent control mode resumes once the accelerator pedal is no longer being used.

NOTES
Comfort settings are not available when the vehicle is in descent control mode.

FULL FUNCTION MODE

WARNING
Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before using adaptive off-road cruise control. See ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL SAFETY.

Full function mode attempts to maintain a constant vehicle speed when traveling off-road.

When first enabled, adaptive off-road cruise control enters descent control mode. See DESCENT CONTROL MODE.

To enter full function mode:

  1. Enable off-road adaptive cruise control. See ENABLING ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL.
  2. Select a speed setting. See SPEED SETTINGS.

Once a speed setting is selected, the instrument panel prompts the driver to select a comfort level. See SPEED SETTINGS.

SPEED SETTINGS

WARNING
Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before using adaptive off-road cruise control. See ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL SAFETY.

Once enabled, adaptive off-road cruise control sets a default speed. The default speed is dependent on the driving mode currently selected. See TERRAIN RESPONSE OVERVIEW.

The maximum speed at which the system operates is 19 mph (30 km/h).

NOTES
Adaptive off-road cruise control also works if Reverse (R) gear is selected. The maximum speed at which the system operates in reverse is 12 mph (20 km/h).

To adjust the set speed:

  • Move the switch (4) up to the SET+ position (1) to raise the vehicle’s set speed, or:
  • Move the switch (4) down to the SET– position (2) to lower the vehicle’s set speed.
  • Press the CAN button (3) to cancel the speed adjustment.
  • Press the RES switch (4) to resume the set speed, if the vehicle’s speed has been lowered through the gentle application of the brake pedal.
WARNING
The RES switch should only be used if the driver is aware of the set speed and intends to return to it. Pressing the RES switch when not aware of the set speed may lead to a loss of control of the vehicle.

Incremental increases or decreases in the set speed vary depending on the vehicle’s current set speed, as follows:

  • 0.3 mph (0.5 km/h) increments if the vehicle’s set speed is between 0 and 3 mph (0 and 5 km/h).
  • 0.6 mph (1 km/h) increments if the vehicle’s set speed is between 3 and 6 mph (5 and 10 km/h).
  • 1 mph (2 km/h) increments if the vehicle’s set speed is between 6 and 19 mph (10 and 30 km/h).

The minimum set speed is 1 mph (2 km/h).

COMFORT SETTINGS

WARNING
Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before using adaptive off-road cruise control. See ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL SAFETY.

ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL DRIVER INTERVENTION

WARNING
Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before using adaptive off-road cruise control. See ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL SAFETY.

Light, gentle use of the brake pedal lowers the vehicle’s set speed. When the brake pedal is released, adaptive off-road cruise control maintains the speed at which the vehicle was traveling when the pedal was released.

A hard press of the brake pedal, or bringing the vehicle to a standstill, cancels adaptive off-road cruise control operation.

The set speed can also be reduced by selecting the turn signals on the approach to a bend. Once the bend has been navigated successfully, the set speed is resumed by canceling the turn signals. See LIGHTING CONTROL.

ADAPTIVE OFF-ROAD CRUISE CONTROL LIMITATIONS

Adaptive off-road cruise control does not operate if the following systems are enabled:

  • Advanced tow assist.
  • Any parking feature.

Adaptive off-road cruise control may also not operate if a system fault is present.

Adaptive off-road cruise control operation is disabled if the vehicle’s speed rises above 50 mph (80 km/h). In this event, the automatic off-road cruise control information lamp extinguishes.

Adaptive off-road cruise control operation is suspended if:

  • The vehicle’s speed rises above 19 mph (30 km/h). In this event, the information lamp flashes. System operation resumes if the vehicle’s speed drops below 19 mph (30 km/h).
  • The brake or accelerator pedals are used. System operation resumes when the pedals are no longer being used.

Adaptive off-road cruise control performance is affected if the vehicle’s brakes become overheated. Operation is suspended if brake temperatures continue to rise.

The instrument panel displays messages to inform the driver of any performance or system issues.
