2022 Kawasaki KLX300R Starting the Engine

Starting the Engine

Shift the transmission into neutral.

NOTE

• The motorcycle is equipped with a starter lockout switch. This switch is designed so that the engine does not start if the transmission is in gear. How- ever, the engine can be started if the clutch lever is pulled.
• Push the main switch to the “ON” position, the red main switch indicator light (LED) turns on.

Leaving the throttle completely closed, push the starter button until the engine starts.

NOTE

• While the engine is cold, the fast idle system automatically raises the engine idle speed.
• The motorcycle is equipped with a vehicle-down sensor which causes the engine to stop automatically if the motorcycle falls down. The yellow engine warning indicator light ( ) blinks when the starter button is pressed if the engine cannot be started. After righting the motorcycle, first turn the main switch off and then back to on before starting the engine.

WARNING
Riding with the side stand in the down position can cause a crash resulting in injury. Do not start the engine or attempt to ride the motorcycle when the side stand is down.

NOTICE
Do not operate the starter continuously for more than 5 seconds or the starter will over-heat. Wait 15 seconds between each operation of the starter to let it cool.

NOTICE
This motorcycle’s radiator does not incorporate a cooling fan. Prolonged idling of the engine with no airflow through the radiator can cause coolant loss and engine overheating resulting in possible engine damage. Any riding conditions that increase engine temperature will further reduce idling time be- fore coolant loss occurs. These conditions include high ambient temperature, sandy or muddy terrain, or other conditions causing high engine loads at low speeds. Furthermore, warming the engine up excessively before operation, or leaving idling with the hot engine temperature after operation results in the engine overheating, too.
