2022 Kawasaki KLX300R Air Cleaner

Air Cleaner

A clogged air cleaner restricts the air intake, increases fuel consumption, reduces engine power, and can cause spark plug fouling. Inspect the air in take system, which includes the air filter and air duct to the throttle body assy, before each race or practice session.

WARNING
If dirt or dust is allowed to pass through into the throttle body assembly, the throttle may become stuck, possibly causing accident. Be sure to keep the dust from entering dur- ing cleaning.

NOTICE
A clogged air cleaner will affect fuel mixture to the engine and reduce engine power and cause spark plug fouling.

NOTE

  • ln dusty areas, the element should be cleaned more frequently than recommended interval.
  • After riding through rain or on muddy roads, the element should be cleaned immediately.

Element Removal

  • Remove the seat mounting bolt and washer on both sides
  • Slide the seat rearward and pull the rear of the seat upward to remove the seat from the frame.

Remove the bolts and air cleaner intake cap.

  • Remove the wing bolt and washer.
  • Remove the element from the air cleaner case.
  • Put a clean, lint-free towel over the air cleaner housing to keep dirt or other foreign material from entering.

NOTICE
If dirt gets through into the engine, excessive engine wear and possibly engine dam age will occur.

Remove the air cleaner element from the element frame.

NOTICE
Do not twist or wring the air cleaner element, as it gets easily torn or damaged.

  • Clean the air cleaner element if it is dirty.
  • Check the air cleaner element for condition. there is any damage, tears or deteriorations, the element must be replaced.

Element Cleaning and Installation
Clean the element in a bath of a high flash-point solvent or hot soapy water. Rinse the element with clear water to remove all traces of the cleaning solution.

WARNING
Gasoline and low flash-point solvents can be flammable and/or explosive and cause severe burns. well-ventilated area, and take care that there is no spark or flame anywhere near the working areas. Do not use gasoline or low flash-point solvents to clean the element.

Squeeze the element dry in a clean towel.

NOTICE
Do not twist, wring or blow the element dry to avoid damaging it.

  • After cleaning, let the fiter dry completely.
  • Saturate the element with a high-quality foam air filter oil and make sure that the oil is evenily applied throughout the element.
  • Squeeze out the excess oil, but do not wring the element as this could cause tearing. In this case, too much oil is better than too little.
  • Finally pat the inside of the element with a paper towel to remove any excess oil.
  • Install the air cleaner element onto element frame.
  • Coat the element lip and lip seat with a thick layer of all-purpose grease to assure a complete seal.

NOTE

  • Element installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
  • Remove the towel from the air cleaner housing
  • Clean inside of the cleaner housing thoroughly.
  • Install the air cleaner element, washer and wingg bolt and tighten the wing bolt with your hand se- curely.
  • Install the air cleaner intake cap and tighten the bolts

Insert the hooks of the seat under the flange collar and frame.

NOTICE
Be careful not to damage the side covers with the rear bracket of seat. Tighten the seat mounting bolt on both sides.

Oil Draining
Inspect the drain plug to see if any oil or water has run down.

A. Drain Plug

If there are any oil, remove the drain plug and drain the oil.

WARNING
Oil on tires will make them slippery and can cause an accident and injury. Be sure to install the plug on the air cleaner housing after draining.
