After entering the vehicle, and all of the doors are closed, the vehicle scans the interior for a valid smart key. If a valid smart key is not detected, the instrument panel displays the message, Smart Key Not Found. If this situation occurs, use a valid smart key to carry out the engine start backup procedure. See ENGINE START BACKUP.
ACTIVITY KEY
WARNING
The activity key system uses Radio Frequency (RF) transmissions that could interfere with implanted medical devices. Make sure that any susceptible medical devices are kept at a safe distance of at least 9 in (22 cm) away from any transmitter. Maintaining this distance avoids any possibility of interference between the system and the medical device. The RFs and field strengths used by the keyless entry system operate well within required medical standards for radiated emissions. In rare circumstances, interference may cause an implanted medical device to malfunction, potentially resulting in serious injury or death. See SMART KEY SYSTEM TRANSMITTERS.

Make sure the trunk is fully closed before leaving the vehicle unattended. Visible and audible warnings indicate if the vehicle is locked and the alarm armed. If there are no visible or audible warnings upon closing the trunk, the vehicle may be unprotected.
OPENING AND CLOSING THE POWERED TRUNK
WARNING
The powered trunk incorporates a soft-close latch. The soft-close latch secures the trunk automatically. Before operating the powered trunk, make sure that the area is clear and anyone in the vicinity does not have any body part in a position where it could be trapped. Note that the soft-close action does not incorporate object detection. Death or serious injury could occur, even with an object detection system.
While the trunk is open, the locking latch is exposed. Do not attempt to manually close the latch, as it may also automatically soft-close and trap items or body parts.
CAUTION
- Make sure there is sufficient space above and at the rear of the vehicle, before operating the trunk. Insufficient opening space may result in damage to the vehicle.
- Do not operate the trunk if a cycle rack is fitted to the trunk. Remove any cycles or racks before operating the trunk.
- The vehicle must not be driven with the trunk lid unlatched and not completely closed. Any items placed in the trunk should be arranged to allow the lid to be securely latched and completely closed. An unlatched or open trunk may allow exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle, causing drowsiness, which in turn may lead to an accident.Jaguar Land Rover will not accept liability for the loss of any possessions from the vehicle or injuries to other road users, occupants or pets if the vehicle is driven with the trunk left open or not fully closed.
- If the trunk automatically re-opens after a closing attempt, do not repeatedly attempt to close it as this may cause the latch mechanism to overheat. Unlock all of the doors and the trunk with the smart key. Make sure that all of the doors, the hood, and the trunk are completely closed and then lock the vehicle again with the smart key.
- The smart key may not be detected if it is placed within a metal container, or if it is shielded by a device with a back-lit LCD screen. For example, a smartphone, laptop (including in a laptop bag), games console.

When the closing trunk reaches its lowest position, it automatically soft-closes to the fully closed position. If the vehicle was previously locked, the alarm re-arms. The hazard warning lamps flash to confirm the alarm status. An audible confirmation may also be given.
If an object is detected that would interfere with the trunk closing, movement stops and then the trunk reverses to the fully open position, if able to do so. An audible warning is given to indicate a mislock. Remove any obstructions and press the switch again to close the trunk.
NOTES
If a tailgate button is pressed while the tailgate is opening or closing, all movement stops. However, if a button is pressed during the soft-close stage, the request is ignored.
NOTES
If the vehicle is locked and armed and a valid smart key cannot be detected within 39 in (1 m) of the rear of the vehicle when the trunk close button, or the exterior release button is pressed, the trunk does not power close. An audible warning sounds to indicate a mislock.
NOTES
If any smart key is left inside the trunk or cabin area when the vehicle is locked and armed and the open trunk is closed, an audible warning sounds. The warning indicates a mislock, and the trunk re-opens to a safe position after approximately 3 seconds. Remove keys and re-close the trunk, or unlock the whole vehicle from the smart key or keyless unlocking, close trunk and then re-lock the vehicle via the smart key or keyless locking.
NOTES
If the vehicle is locked and armed and the powered trunk is closed manually, the vehicle searches for a valid smart key. If no smart key is detected within 39 in (1 m) of the rear of the vehicle, or a smart key remains inside the vehicle, an audible warning sounds to indicate a mislock. The trunk re-opens to a safe position after approximately 3 seconds.
NOTES
The smart key may not be detected if it is inside a metal container. Devices with a back-lit LCD screen, e.g., smartphone, laptop, including when inside a bag, games consoles, may also obstruct smart key detection.

GESTURE TRUNK
WARNING
Make sure that the standing area is stable and not slippery before performing the kick movement. Failure to do so could result in and accident, leading to serious injury or death.
WARNING
Do not make contact with the vehicle’s exhaust, as it may be hot. Contact with the hot exhaust could cause serious injury or death.
CAUTION
Make sure that there is sufficient space above and at the rear of the vehicle before operating the trunk. Insufficient opening space may result in damage to the vehicle.
CAUTION
Do not operate the trunk if a cycle rack is fitted to the trunk. Remove any cycles or racks before operating the trunk.
NOTES
The gesture action is a smooth kick and returns motion, not a swipe motion.
NOTES
If the vehicle’s ignition is switched on, the trunk operates but the turn signals do not flash.
NOTES
A valid smart key must be within 39 in (1m) of the trunk. The smart key may not be detected if it is inside a metal container, or is shielded by a device with a back-lit LCD screen. For example, a smartphone laptop, including when inside a bag, or a games console. Keep the smart key clear of such devices when attempting the hands-free operation of the powered trunk.
NOTES
Certain conditions may affect the performance of the sensors, and movement beneath the bumper may not be detected. If this should happen, use the interior trunk release button or the smart key’s trunk release button. Check the operation of the gesture trunk when the vehicle is in a new location.
Sensors are positioned within the outer parts of the rear bumper. The sensors recognize a valid kick movement of a foot below the bumper level. The foot gesture allows automatic opening or closing of a powered trunk. To operate the gesture trunk approach the vehicle and perform a smooth kick and return motion. The kick should last between 1 and 2 seconds and should take place within one of the vehicle’s two sensor areas, as illustrated. When a valid kick movement is recognized by the vehicle, the turn signals flash and the trunk operates. Unintentional operation: In exceptional circumstances, and if the smart key is within 47 in (1.2 m) of the trunk, the powered trunk may operate unintentionally due to the following:
- Car washing or high-pressure cleaning.
- Moving objects beneath the rear bumper sensors.
- While changing a rear road wheel.
- While fitting snow chains to the rear wheels.
