AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

2023-JAGUAR-F-TYPE-FIG24WARNING
Park (P) should only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary. If any other gear position is selected while the vehicle is stationary, the vehicle can move unexpectedly, which may result in death or serious injury. Always make sure the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is applied after engaging P.

CAUTION
Never select P while the vehicle is in motion. Doing so can result in serious transmission damage.
CAUTION
Never select Reverse (R) while the vehicle is in forward motion. Doing so can result in serious transmission damage.
CAUTION
Never select a forward gear while the vehicle is moving backward. Doing so can result in serious transmission damage.
CAUTION
Do not allow the vehicle to remain stationary with a drive gear selected and the engine running. If the engine is to idle for a prolonged period, select P or Neutral (N), and apply the EPB. The vehicle may move unexpectedly with any other gear position selected, which may lead to an accident.
NOTES
When the gear selector is released after normal operation, it returns to the central position, except for when in the Sport (S) position.

The instrument panel displays the selection status of the gear selector and the steering wheel’s gear selector paddles (Sequential shift). The appropriate indicator lamp on top of the gear selector illuminates to confirm selection.

NOTES
If the driver’s door is opened with the transmission engaged in R, Drive (D) or S, then P is automatically selected.
  1. Press P to select Park. The P indicator lamp illuminates to confirm selection.

Select P before switching off the engine.

    NOTES
P can be selected from any gear selector position.
    NOTES
P cannot be selected by manually moving the gear selector.
    NOTES
If the engine is switched off with Neutral (N) selected, the system waits for 10 minutes before selecting P. It is a function that should only be used to allow the vehicle to be conveyed through a car wash, for example. Do not use this function for vehicle recovery purposes.
  2. When the vehicle is stationary, press the brake pedal before selecting DN, or R.
  3. With the brake pedal still pressed, press the release button to allow the selection of the required drive:

    Move rearward to select D.

Move forward to the first position to select N.

Move forward to the second position to select R.

    NOTES
The release button is required for all gear selections, except for when selecting N from D or R, or selecting S from D, or D from S.
  4. While in D, move the gear selector one side movement to the left to select S.
    NOTES
Reverse this action to return to D.
  5. To manually change gear with the gear selector while in S, pull the gear selector rearward for up-shifts and push forward for down-shifts.

The instrument panel displays the manual gear selection status.

The relevant gear selector indicator shows the status of the manual gear selection:

Continuous illumination confirms the driver’s gear change request is recognized and selected.

On/off flashing confirms the driver’s gear change request has been recognized but not selected.

  6. Sequential shift gear selector paddles: Allows manual gear selection while in D or S. Lightly pull the left paddle for down-shifts, or lightly pull the right paddle for up-shifts.

To exit manual mode, pull and hold the right paddle for approximately 1 second. The vehicle returns to the previous automatic operation: D or S.

    NOTES
The gear shift paddles can be configured to be active in both D and S, or active in S only, via the Vehicle settings menu. See INSTRUMENT PANEL MENU OPERATION.

Sequential shift can be effective when rapid acceleration and engine braking are required. A gear shift indicator warning lamp illuminates briefly at the recommended (up-shift) gear change point. If the gear selector remains in the D position, temporary use of the manual gear selection mode is held while the driver is accelerating. With D selected, manual gear selection mode is also held while decelerating, cornering, or continuing to request gear shift changes via the steering wheel paddles. See GEARSHIFT (GREEN).

    NOTES
If continued use of the Sequential shift gear selector paddles is required, select S.

LIMP-HOME MODE

If a transmission system fault is detected a warning message displays in the instrument panel. In this event, only limited gears may become available. If possible, the vehicle should be carefully driven to the nearest place of safety. Seek qualified assistance.

CAUTION
The driver should be aware that the vehicle’s performance is also reduced and must take this into account when driving. Not doing so may result in damage to the vehicle. The use of all manual shifts (the steering wheel’s manual gear selectors and the shifter) are also disabled.

Some transmission faults may cause the gear selector to be locked in position, until the ignition is switched off. A flashing gear status in the instrument panel indicates that the driver’s gear request cannot be engaged. In this event, select Neutral (N) and then select the required gear change again. If the requested position cannot be engaged due to the speed of the vehicle, the flashing will stop when the vehicle has slowed down sufficiently. If the transmission is still unable to engage the requested gear, contact a retailer/authorized repairer.
