2023 JAGUAR F-TYPE ENTERING THE VEHICLE
SMART KEY OPERATION
The smart key system uses Radio Frequency (RF) transmissions that could interfere with implanted medical devices. To avoid any possibility of interference between the system and the device, make sure that the device is kept at a safe distance. The distance should be at least 22 cm away from any transmitter. In rare circumstances, interference may cause an implanted medical device to malfunction. Malfunction of implanted medical devices may cause injury or death. See SMART KEY SYSTEM TRANSMITTERS.
Never leave children or animals unattended in the vehicle. The vehicle can be operated when the smart key is inside the vehicle. Doing so may potentially result in accidental or unauthorised operation. Unauthorised operation may lead to serious injury or death.
The operational range of the smart key varies considerably, depending on atmospheric conditions and interference from other transmitting devices.
If any door, or the tailgate or boot, is unlocked ten times within a short period, the locking latch disables for approximately 1 minute.
A replacement smart key can be obtained only from a retailer/authorised repairer. The retailer/authorised repairer requires proof of identification and ownership. Notify a retailer/authorised repairer immediately if a smart key is lost or stolen.
NOTES
The security system disarms automatically when the vehicle is unlocked with a smart key. However, if a door is not opened within 40 seconds, the security system re-engages the locks and the alarm (where fitted) re-arms. Automatic re-locking and re-arming is a precautionary action to protect the vehicle when it is unintentionally left unlocked.
The vehicle is supplied with two smart keys. The smart keys act as remote controls for the locking and alarm systems. The smart keys allow the vehicle to be locked, unlocked, and driven without the use of a conventional key. Each smart key also has an emergency key housed behind a slide-off cover. See EMERGENCY LOCKING.
- Lock: Press to secure the vehicle. The vehicle single locks. In some markets, a second press double locks the vehicle. If power-fold mirrors are enabled, the mirrors fold in. Press and hold to activate the global closing feature. See GLOBAL CLOSING, SINGLE LOCKING, DOUBLE LOCKING and DOOR MIRRORS.
- Unlock: Press briefly to unlock the vehicle and disarm the alarm. The hazard warning lights flash twice to indicate that the vehicle is unlocked and the alarm is disarmed. The interior lights illuminate to assist entry to the vehicle. If power-fold mirrors are enabled, the mirrors unfold. Press and hold to activate the global opening feature. See GLOBAL OPENING.
- Tailgate or boot: Press briefly to release, open, or close the tailgate or boot lid. If the vehicle is locked and armed, all of the other doors remain closed and the exterior alarm remains armed while the tailgate or boot lid is open. Intrusion and inclination sensing systems disable until the tailgate or boot is closed again. When closing, if the vehicle is locked, the hazard warning lights flash to confirm that the full alarm system has re-armed. An audible tone sounds when the vehicle is double locked.
- Panic alarm: Press and hold for 3 seconds, or press three times within 3 seconds, to activate the horn and the hazard warning lights. Once active for more than 5 seconds, the alarm can be cancelled. Press the button and hold for 3 seconds, or press three times within 3 seconds. The panic alarm also cancels if a valid smart key is present when the START/STOP button is pressed.
- Headlights: When approaching the vehicle during darkness, press to switch on the headlights for approach illumination. Press again to switch approach illumination off. The approach illumination preset delay period is 30 seconds. The delay period can be configured to provide illumination lasting between 0 and 240 seconds. See INSTRUMENT PANEL MENU OPERATION.
Make sure the smart key is not left inside the vehicle before closing the tailgate or boot. The smart key may not be detected if kept inside a metal container, or shielded by a device with a back-lit LCD screen. For example, a smartphone, laptop, including when inside a bag, or a games console.
NOTES
A replacement smart key can be obtained only from a retailer/authorised repairer. The retailer/authorised repairer requires proof of identification and vehicle ownership.
Notify a retailer/authorised repairer immediately if a smart key is lost or stolen.
- Emergency key blade access: Slide open the side cover to release, then remove.
- Emergency door unlock: If the smart key fails to open the vehicle, insert the key blade into the lock barrel behind the driver’s door handle. To access the lock barrel, push on the front end of the door handle, which presents the rear of the handle. Pull the handle out to the deployed position to access to the lock barrel.
Make sure that the key is inserted in the orientation shown above. Failure to do so may result in damage to the vehicle’s paintwork.
To unlock, turn the key blade clockwise and release. The alarm sounds if the door is unlocked until the smart key is positioned correctly to disarm the alarm. The alarm also sounds if the unlock button is pressed on the smart key.
To lock, turn the key blade counter-clockwise and release. See DEACTIVATING THE ALARM WHEN TRIGGERED.
All of the doors lock, but the alarm does not arm.
2-STAGE UNLOCKING
To unlock the vehicle and disarm the alarm system, press the smart key’s unlock button. See SMART KEY OPERATION
The vehicle unlocks in one of two ways:
- 2-stage unlocking on: Unlocks the driver’s door only. A second press is required to unlock the remaining doors and the luggage compartment.
- 2-stage unlocking off: Unlocks all of the doors and the luggage compartment on the first press.
To change the vehicle’s 2-stage unlocking status, press the smart key’s lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. The hazard warning lights flash twice to confirm the change.
2-stage unlocking can also be set via the Vehicle Settings menu. See INSTRUMENT PANEL MENU OPTIONS.
If an audible warning sounds when the vehicle is unlocked, there may be a fault with the alarm sensors. Consult a retailer/authorized repairer as soon as possible.
KEYLESS ENTRY
The smart key may not be detected if it is inside a metal container, or if it is shielded by a device with an LCD screen. For example, a smartphone, laptop, including when inside a laptop bag, or a games console.
The smart key needs only to be on the driver’s person, or in a non-metallic bag or briefcase. The smart key does not need to be exposed or handled.
Keyless entry allows the vehicle to be opened if a smart key is within 1 m of the door handle.
Press the button on the door handle to unlock the vehicle. The vehicle unlocks, the alarm system disarms, and the hazard warning lights flash twice as confirmation. The door handle deploys to the unlocked position. If power-fold mirrors are enabled, they unfold.
If single-point entry is the current security setting and the passenger door is opened first, the driver’s door also unlocks.
GLOBAL OPENING
Global opening can be enabled and disabled via the Vehicle settings menu. See INSTRUMENT PANEL MENU OPTIONS.
To unlock the vehicle and open all of the windows simultaneously, press and hold the smart key’s unlock button for 3 seconds. See SMART KEY OPERATION
To cancel global opening, press any of the buttons on the smart key.
CONVENIENCE MODE
When the driver’s door is opened using either the smart key or keyless entry, the vehicle’s electrical system initiates convenience mode. The following systems become functional:
- Driving position memory.
- Seat and steering column adjustment.
- Interior and exterior lighting.
- Instrument panel.
- Auxiliary power sockets.
STEERING COLUMN LOCK
The steering column unlocks when a smart key is detected inside the vehicle. The steering column locks automatically, after a time delay, when the ignition is switched off and the smart key is removed from the vehicle.
During vehicle recovery, a smart key must remain inside the vehicle, so that the steering column lock remains unlocked. The locked steering column may cause damage to the vehicle, during the recovery.

If the steering column lock malfunctions, the instrument panel displays the message Steering column locked. If this occurs:
- Lock and then unlock the vehicle using the smart key.
- Turn the steering wheel gently to the left and right to try again to unlock the steering column lock.
NOTES
The steering column lock malfunctions if the steering column is under load. If the vehicle is parked with the steering on full lock, the steering wheel position may inadvertently press a front tyre against a kerb, etc.
If the problem persists, seek qualified assistance immediately.
SMART KEY SYSTEM TRANSMITTERS
Keep any implanted medical device at least 22 cm away from any transmitter mounted in the vehicle. Failure to do so could result in interference between the system and device. Interference may cause the implanted medical device to malfunction, potentially causing serious injury or death.

OPENING AND CLOSING THE BOOT
While the luggage compartment is open, the locking latch is exposed. Do not attempt to manually close the latch, as it may also automatically soft-close and trap items or body parts.
The vehicle must not be driven with the boot lid or tailgate unlatched. Any items placed in the boot should be arranged to allow the boot lid or tailgate to be securely latched and completely closed. An unlatched or open boot lid or tailgate may allow exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle, causing drowsiness, which in turn may lead to an accident.
Make sure there is sufficient space above and at the rear of the vehicle before attempting to open the boot lid or tailgate. Insufficient opening space may result in damage to the vehicle.
Do not open the boot lid or tailgate if a cycle rack is fitted. Remove any cycles and/or racks before opening the boot lid or tailgate. Cycles and racks may cause damage to the vehicle while opening the boot lid or tailgate.
If the boot lid or tailgate automatically re-opens after a closing attempt, do not repeatedly attempt to close it, as this may cause the latch mechanism to overheat. Overheating may lead to vehicle damage.
The smart key may not be detected if kept inside a metal container, or shielded by a device with a back-lit LCD screen. For example, a smartphone, laptop, including when inside a bag, or a games console.
- Smart key boot lid or tailgate release button: Press to release the boot lid or tailgate and then lift to open.
- Exterior boot lid or tailgate release button: Press to release the boot lid or tailgate when the vehicle is unlocked.
- Interior boot lid or tailgate release button: Press to release the boot lid or tailgate.
To close the boot lid or tailgate, lower the boot lid or tailgate to the fully closed position.
If a valid smart key cannot be detected within 1 m of the rear of the vehicle, an audible warning sounds to indicate a mislock. The boot lid or tailgate re-opens after approximately 3 seconds.
If the smart key is inadvertently left inside the boot after the vehicle is locked, an audible warning sounds to indicate a mislock. The boot lid or tailgate re-opens after approximately 3 seconds.
Make sure the boot lid or tailgate is fully secure before leaving the vehicle unattended. Visible and audible warnings indicate if the vehicle is locked and the alarm armed. If there are no visible or audible warnings upon closing the boot lid or tailgate, the vehicle may be unprotected.
OPENING AND CLOSING THE POWERED TAILGATE
Before operating the tailgate, make sure that anyone in the vicinity does not have any body part in a position where it could be trapped. Note that the soft-close action does not incorporate object detection. Death or serious injury could occur, even with an object detection system.
While the tailgate is open, the locking latch is exposed. Do not attempt to manually close the latch, as it may also automatically soft-close and trap items or body parts.
The vehicle must not be driven with the boot unlatched and not completely closed. Any items placed in the boot should be arranged to allow the boot to be securely latched and completely closed. An unlatched or open boot may allow exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle, causing drowsiness, which in turn may lead to an accident.
Make sure there is sufficient space above and at the rear of the vehicle before operating the tailgate. Insufficient opening space may result in damage to the vehicle.
Do not operate the tailgate if a cycle rack is fitted to the tailgate. Remove any cycles and/or racks before operating the tailgate. Cycles or racks may cause damage to the powered tailgate.
The tailgate does not open if the vehicle is travelling at, or above, approximately 5 km/h (3 mph).
If a valid smart key cannot be detected within 1 m of the rear of the vehicle, the tailgate does not power-close. An audible warning sounds to indicate a mislock.
If the tailgate is closed manually, the vehicle searches for a valid smart key. If no smart key is detected within 1 m of the rear of the vehicle, an audible warning sounds to indicate a mislock. The tailgate re-opens after approximately 3 seconds.
If the smart key is left inside the luggage compartment and the vehicle is locked and armed, an audible warning sounds to indicate a mislock. The tailgate re-opens after approximately 3 seconds. The smart key may not be detected if it is in a metal container, or if it is shielded by a device with an LCD screen. For example, smartphones, laptops in or outside of laptop bags, games consoles, etc.
If a tailgate button is pressed while the tailgate is opening or closing, all movement stops. However, if a tailgate button is pressed during the soft door close stage, the request is ignored.
- Tailgate exterior release button: Press to open the tailgate.
NOTES
The tailgate exterior release button operates when both of the doors are unlocked and the gear selector is in the Park (P) position. When the gear selector is in Neutral (N), the exterior release operates only if both doors are unlocked, and the ignition off or in convenience mode. The button does not operate if the gear selector is in any other position. - Powered tailgate close button: Press to close or stop the tailgate.
The tailgate can also be opened using the following methods:
- The interior tailgate button. See DRIVER CONTROLS.
- The smart key’s tailgate release button. See SMART KEY OPERATION.
After the tailgate has opened to its set height, it can be manually lowered. If the tailgate fails to open or close correctly, close it manually and then press the exterior tailgate release button again.
As the closing tailgate approaches the closed position, it soft-closes. If the vehicle was previously locked, the alarm re-arms. The hazard warning lights flash to confirm the alarm status. An audible confirmation may also be given.
Object detection while opening: If an object is detected that would interfere with the tailgate opening, tailgate movement stops. Remove any obstructions and press a tailgate release button again to open.
Object detection while closing: Tailgate movement stops if an object is detected that would interfere with a tailgate closing. The tailgate will then reverse to the fully open position if there are no further obstructions. An audible warning is given to indicate a mislock. Remove any obstructions, and, if the tailgate is open, press a tailgate release button again to close the tailgate.
POWERED TAILGATE OPENING HEIGHT
The maximum opening height can be set as required, for convenience purposes, e.g., in parking areas with low ceiling heights.
- Open the powered tailgate to the position required as the maximum height. Press any tailgate button to stop movement at the required position. The final position can be achieved manually, if required.
- Make sure the tailgate is stationary for at least 3 seconds.
- Press and hold the tailgate close button for longer than 5 seconds, or until an audible confirmation sounds, to set the required opening height. Release the tailgate close button.
- Close the tailgate, then open again to check that it opens to the set height.
The maximum opening height is now set.
If, after performing step 3 of the process, the tailgate closes automatically, the required height has not been set. Repeat the process, making sure that all steps are adhered to.
The powered tailgate may lose its position memory if there are multiple object detections or if battery voltage is low. To reset the tailgate:
- Manually close the tailgate.
- Press a tailgate release button.
- Allow the tailgate to power fully open or to the previously set position.
- Press and release a tailgate close button.
- Allow the tailgate to power-close fully.
The tailgate programmed position memory is now restored.
DRIVE-AWAY LOCKING
Drive-away locking automatically locks the doors and retracts the deployed door handles when the vehicle reaches a set speed. The drive-away locking feature can be enabled or disabled via the Vehicle settings menu. See INSTRUMENT PANEL MENU OPTIONS.
Pressing the central locking or unlocking button overrides drive-away locking for the current journey. See DOOR LOCKS AND HANDLES.
SMART KEY BATTERY REPLACEMENT
Make sure the following warnings have been read and fully understood before using components with coin or button cell batteries. Failure to follow the guidance could result in serious injury or death.
Chemical burn hazard. Batteries can cause severe internal burns within 2 hours of swallowing and may result in death. If it is suspected that a battery may have been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, seek medical advice immediately.
Keep new and used batteries away from children.
If the battery compartment does not close securely, stop using the product and keep the product away from children.
When the battery needs replacing, there is a significant decrease in the effective range and the instrument panel displays Smart key battery low.
To replace the battery:
- Slide the cover in the direction of the arrows to remove.
- Use the emergency key blade to separate the smart key’s body.
- Remove the battery and press the upper positive terminal until the negative grid is touched. Upon recovering the position of the terminal, the coin cell shall have firm positive contact with the upper terminal.
- Fit a new and unused CR2032 type battery, available from a retailer/authorised repairer, with the positive (+) side upward.
- For cars with passive entry: after replacing the battery, allow 10 minutes for the internal battery to recharge before testing the smart key function.
Avoid touching the new battery. Moisture or oil from fingers can reduce battery life and corrode the contacts.
If the low battery warning does not extinguish, it indicates that the replacement battery is not in a new or unused condition.
Refit the parts in reverse order, making sure that the parts click securely into place.
Battery disposal: Batteries contain harmful substances and must be disposed of correctly. Seek advice on disposal from a retailer/authorized repairer and/or the local authority.
SMART KEY CARE
To prevent accidental or unauthorized operation, never leave the smart key unattended in the vehicle. Never leave children or animals unattended in the vehicle. The vehicle can be operated when the smart key remains inside the vehicle.
Do not expose the smart key to extremes of heat, dust, or humidity. Do not allow the smart key to come into contact with fluids. Do not leave the smart key exposed to direct sunlight as sunlight may cause damage.
The instrument panel will warn if the smart key battery is depleted. If a ‘Smart key low battery warning is displayed, replace the batteries in all of the smart keys simultaneously. Replacing all smart key batteries simultaneously avoids permanent damage to the smart keys.
The Radio Frequency (RF) used by the smart key may be used by other devices, e.g., medical equipment. The use of other RF-emitting devices may prevent the smart key from operating correctly.
The emergency key blade number is recorded on an attached label. Peel off the label and store it securely away from the vehicle.
The operational range of the smart key depends on atmospheric conditions and interference from other transmitting devices.
