2022 Jaguar F-TYPE Starting The Engine

STARTING SAFETY

WARNING

Never start the engine and leave it running when the vehicle is in an enclosed space. Exhaust gases are poisonous and can cause unconsciousness and death if inhaled.

CAUTION

If the engine fails to start, do not continue cranking, as this discharges the battery. The catalytic converter may also be damaged due to unburnt fuel passing through the exhaust.

NOTES
The smart key may not be detected if placed within a metal container or shielded by a device with a back-lit LCD screen. For example, a smartphone, laptop, including when inside a laptop bag, or a games console. Keep the smart key clear of such devices when attempting keyless entry, an engine start, or the engine start backup procedure.

STARTING THE ENGINE

WARNING

Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before starting the vehicle. See STARTING SAFETY.

To start the engine:

  1. Make sure a valid smart key is inside the vehicle.
  2. Make sure Park (P) or Neutral (N) is selected.
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press and release the engine START/STOP button. See DRIVER CONTROLS.

Once the engine starts release the brake pedal, if safe to do so.

NOTES

Gasoline engines only: When starting the engine, the idle speed may rise. The rise in idle speed helps the engine reach its optimum operating temperature quickly, improving fuel efficiency.

SWITCHING OFF THE ENGINE

Before switching off the engine, it is recommended that the vehicle is stationary. Make sure the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is applied and Park (P) or Neutral (N) is selected.
Press and release the engine START/STOP button. The engine now stops. The vehicle’s ignition system also switches off.
To switch off the engine while the vehicle is moving:

CAUTION

When the vehicle is moving, it is not advisable to switch off the engine. Driving with due care and attention, and in a manner that is safe for the vehicle, its occupants, and other road users, remains the driver’s responsibility. Driving without due care and attention greatly increases the risk of an accident.
If a situation arises where engine switch-off is urgent, the following procedure applies:

  1. Press and hold the engine START/STOP button for longer than 2 seconds, or
  2. Press and release the engine START/STOP button twice within 3 seconds.

With either method, the instrument panel displays the message Engine Stop Button Pressed.

ROLLING RESTART

If the engine is switched off while the vehicle is moving, a rolling restart can be initiated. To initiate a rolling restart, select Neutral (N) and press the engine START/STOP button.

NOTES

The engine START/STOP button is inhibited for 2 seconds after the engine has been switched off.

ENGINE START BACKUP

WARNING

Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before starting the vehicle. See STARTING SAFETY.

The engine start backup procedure can be used to disarm the alarm and start the engine if either of the following occurs:

  • The vehicle is unlocked using the emergency key blade.
  • The smart key is not detected by the vehicle.

The engine start backup procedure can be used when the instrument panel displays the message Place Smart Key as shown, and press the start button.

  1. Position the smart key flat against the underside of the dashboard, with the buttons facing outward.
    NOTES

There is a small depression in the dashboard to help locate the correct position.

  2. While holding the smart key in position, firmly press the brake pedal.
  3. Press and release the engine START/STOP button.
  4. Once the engine starts release the brake pedal, if safe to do so.
  5. If the smart key is not recognized, or the engine fails to start, consult a retailer/authorized repairer.

IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START

WARNING

Make sure the relevant safety warnings have been read and understood before starting the vehicle. See STARTING SAFETY.

WARNING

If the engine fails to start when the engine START/STOP button is pressed, and the vehicle has been in a recent collision, seek qualified assistance.

If the engine fails to start, and a valid smart key is inside the vehicle, a check must be made to determine the cause. To do this:

  1. Switch on the vehicle’s ignition. See SWITCHING ON THE IGNITION.
  2. Check the instrument panel for any illuminated warning lamps and for warning messages. Seek qualified assistance, if necessary. See WARNING LAMPS AND INDICATORS and WARNING AND INFORMATION MESSAGES.
  3. Switch off the vehicle’s ignition.

Alternatively, if the engine fails to start, the alarm system may need to be reset. To reset the alarm system, lock and unlock the vehicle. See SMART KEY OPERATION.

If the engine still fails to start, consult a retailer/authorized repairer.

If the engine persistently fails to start, carry out the following steps:

  1. Make sure that a valid smart key is inside the vehicle.
  2. Make sure that Park (P) or Neutral (N) is selected.
  3. Press and hold the engine START/STOP button until the warning lamps in the instrument panel illuminate.
  4. Firmly press the brake pedal.
  5. Slowly press the accelerator pedal and hold it in the fully pressed position.
  6. Press and release the engine START/STOP button. The engine begins to crank.
  7. Release the accelerator pedal when the engine starts.

Once the engine starts release the brake pedal, if safe to do so.

If the engine still fails to start, consult a retailer/authorized repairer.

SWITCHABLE ACTIVE EXHAUST

The switchable active exhaust feature allows the driver to change the volume and tone of the exhaust system.

NOTES

The switchable active exhaust feature is switched on automatically if the vehicle is being driven in dynamic mode. See DYNAMIC MODE.

NOTES

It remains the responsibility of the driver to adhere to local noise regulations when using the switchable active exhaust feature. Press the button on the center console to engage the switchable active exhaust feature. When selected, the button LED illuminates to confirm that the feature has been switched on. To return to the normal setting, press the button again. The button LED extinguishes to confirm that the feature has been switched off.

NOTES

The switchable active exhaust feature is reset to the normal setting at the start of each ignition cycle.
