Tiree pressure monitoring system

The tire pressure monitoring system gives a warning with an indicator symbol in the driver display when the pressure in one or more of the car’s tires is too low.

This symbol illuminates to indicate low tire pressure. Check the tire pressure in the Car status app in the center display.

If there is a fault in the system the tire pressure warning symbol flashes for approximately one minute and then remains illuminated.

System description

The tire pressure monitoring system measures differences in rotation speed between the different wheels via the ABS system in order to be able to determine whether they have the correct tire pressure. If the tire pressure is too low, the tire’s diameter is changed and, as a result, so is its rotation speed. By comparing the tires with each other the system can determine whether one or more tires have pressure that is too low.

General information on the tire monitoring system

In the information below, the tire monitoring system is generally referred to as TPMS.

Each tire, including the spare tire, should be checked once a month. When checking, the tire should be cold and have the air pressure recommended by the car manufacturer specified on the tire pressure label or on the tire pressure table. If the car has tires of a different size than that recommended by the manufacturer, find out what the correct air pressure level is for these.

As an extra safety feature, the car is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which shows when the air pressure in one or more tires is too low. When the indicator symbol for low air pressure is lit, stop and check the tires as soon as possible and inflate to the correct air pressure.

Driving with tires that have tire pressure that is too low may cause the tire to overheat, which can cause a tire failure. Low tire pressure also reduces fuel efficiency as well as tire service life, and can affect car handling and stopping ability. Note that TPMS does not replace regular tire maintenance. It is the driver’s responsibility to maintain correct tire pressure, even if the limit for low tire pressure has not been reached so that the indicator symbol illuminates.

The car is also equipped with a TPMS system fault indicator, which indicates when the system is not functioning correctly. The TPMS system fault indicator is combined with the indicator symbol for low tire pressure. When the system detects a fault, the symbol in the driver display will flash for about one minute and then remain illuminated. This procedure will be repeated when the car is started until the fault has been rectified. When the symbol is illuminated, the system’s ability to detect or warn of low tire pressure may be affected.

A TPMS system fault can occur for several reasons, such as after changing to a spare tire, or changing tires or wheels that prevent TPMS from functioning correctly.

Always check the indicator symbol for TPMS after changing one or more tires in order to ensure the new tire or wheel is working correctly with TPMS.

Tips

  • Always save a new tire pressure in the system after changing a tire or adjusting tire pressure.
  • The use of snow chains may affect the tire pressure monitoring system. This is indicated by a symbol and message in the driver display. When the snow chains are removed, all tires should be checked and adjusted to the recommended tire pressure. After that, the new tire pressure needs to be saved in the tire pressure monitoring system.
  • If you change to tires of a different size than the ones fitted at the factory, the system must be reset by storing a new tire pressure for these tires to avoid false warnings.
  • If a spare wheel is used, it is possible that the tire pressure monitoring system will not work correctly due to the differences between the wheels.
  • The system does not replace the need for regular tire inspection and maintenance.
  • It is not possible to switch off the tire pressure monitoring system.

Warning

  • Incorrect tire pressure may lead to tire failure, which could result in the driver losing control of the car.
  • The system cannot indicate sudden tire damage in advance.

See tire pressure status in the center display

With the system for tire pressure monitoring, tire pressure status can be viewed in the center display.

Checking status

Several minutes of driving above 35 km/h (22 mph) are required for the system to become active.

Press 2023-Volvo-V90-Tyre-pressure-monitoring-fig- (2) in the center display.

Tap on Car status to view the tire pressure status.

Action in the event of a warning for low tire pressure

When the system for tire pressure warns that tire pressure is too low, action is required.

2023-Volvo-V90-Tyre-pressure-monitoring-fig- (1)

Check and rectify the tire pressure when the indicator symbol for the system is illuminated and the message for low tire pressure message is shown.

Switch off the car.

Check the tire pressure in all four tires with a tire pressure gauge.

Inflate the tires to the correct pressure, see the decal on the door pillar on the driver’s side showing the recommended pressure for factory-fitted tires.

Always save a new tire pressure in the system via the center display after the tire pressure has been adjusted. This can only be done when the car is running and stationary.

Note that the indicator symbol does not extinguish until the low tire pressure has been rectified and storing a new tire pressure has been started.

Several minutes of driving is required at a speed above 35 km/h (22 mph) in order for the system to be able to store the new reference value.

Note

To avoid incorrect tire pressure, the pressure should be checked on cold tires. “Cold tires” means the tires are the same temperature as the ambient temperature (approx. 3 hours after the car has been driven). After a few kilometers of driving, the tires warm up and the pressure increases.

Note

  • After a tire has been inflated, always refit the dust cap in order to avoid damage to the valve from gravel, dirt, etc.
  • Only use plastic dust caps. Metal dust caps can rust and become difficult to unscrew.

Warning

  • Incorrect tire pressure may lead to tire failure, which could result in the driver losing control of the car.
  • The system cannot indicate sudden tire damage in advance.

Saving a new reference value for tire pressure monitoring

In order for the system for tire pressure monitoring to work correctly, a reference value for the tire pressure must be saved. This must take place every time the tires are changed or the tire pressure is changed so that the system can warn about low pressure correctly.

Perform the following procedure to store a new tire pressure as a reference value in the system:

Switch off the car.

Inflate the tires to the correct pressure, see the decal on the door pillar on the driver’s side showing the recommended pressure for factory-fitted tires.

Start the car.

Press 2023-Volvo-V90-Tyre-pressure-monitoring-fig- (2) in the center display.

Press Car status.

Press Store pressure. The car must be running and stationary when storing tire pressure.

Note

The Store pressure button is used to save new reference values for tire pressures in the tire pressure monitoring system. For safety reasons, it is only available (selectable) when the car is stationary and the engine is running.

The tire pressure must be saved after adjusting tire pressure or changing tires. Adjust the tire pressure to the recommended values and press Confirm to save the tire pressure.

Note

To avoid mistaken activation of the Store pressure function, it is necessary to confirm in a second step that the tire pressure should be saved.

Drive the car until the new tire pressure has been saved. The new tire pressure is stored when the car is driven at a speed above 35 km/h (22 mph).

When sufficient data have been collected for the system to be able to detect low tire pressure, the animation showing the progress of storing the new reference value disappears from the center display.

If storing fails, a message is shown.

Warning

The exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which is invisible and odorless, but highly toxic. The procedure to save a new tire pressure must therefore always be performed outdoors or in a workshop with exhaust extraction.
