2023 Jaguar I-Pace Starting Vehicle
STARTING THE VEHICLE OVERVIEW
Starting an Electric Vehicle (EV) is similar to starting a vehicle with an internal combustion engine.
- When the vehicle’s electrical system is enabled, a number of features start operating, and the instrument panel warning lamps illuminate. See ENABLING THE VEHICLE’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.
- When the vehicle’s motor is enabled, the motor is ready to provide propulsion energy to the vehicle’s driveline. See STARTING THE VEHICLE.
- In order for the electric motor to provide propulsion energy to the vehicle’s driveline, a drive selection must first be made. See DRIVING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE.
STARTING THE VEHICLE
The smart key may not be detected if placed within a metal container, or shielded by a device with a back-lit LCD screen. For example, a smartphone, laptop, including when inside a laptop bag, or a games console. Keep the smart key clear of such devices when attempting keyless entry, a vehicle start, or the start backup procedure.
Starting an Electric Vehicle (EV) is not possible if it is plugged into a charging point and charging. The vehicle is also locked in Park (P) while charging. The instrument panel displays the message Disconnect Charge Cable Before Starting Vehicle to inform the driver that starting has been inhibited.
To start the vehicle:
- Make sure a valid smart key is inside the vehicle.
- Make sure P is selected.
- Press the brake pedal firmly.
- Press and release the START/STOP button on the dashboard.
The instrument panel displays the message Ready. See POWER GAUGE.
The electric motor is now enabled, and ready to provide propulsion energy to the vehicle’s driveline, once a drive selection is made. See DRIVING AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE.
Before leaving the vehicle, make sure that safe driver exit conditions are met. See DRIVER EXIT.
Failure to leave the vehicle in a safe condition may cause an accident, leading to injury or death.
SWITCHING OFF THE VEHICLE
Before switching off, it is recommended that the vehicle is stationary. Make sure the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is applied and Park (P) is selected.
Press and release the START/STOP button on the dashboard. The electric motor switches off. The vehicle’s electrical system also switches off.
To switch off the electric motor while the vehicle is moving:
It is not advisable to switch off the electric motor when the vehicle is moving. Switching off the electric motor while the vehicle is moving may cause an accident, leading to injury or death.
If a situation arises where an electric motor switch-off is urgent, carry out the following procedure:
- Press and hold the START/STOP button for longer than 2 seconds, or:
- Press and release the START/STOP button twice within 3 seconds.
With either method, the instrument panel displays the message Engine Stop Button Pressed.
ENABLING THE VEHICLE’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
To enable the vehicle’s electrical system without starting the vehicle:
- Make sure that a valid smart key is inside the vehicle and that the brake pedal is not pressed.
NOTES
Do not press the brake pedal when pressing the START/STOP button. Doing so enables the electric motor. See STARTING THE VEHICLE. - Press and hold the START/STOP button on the dashboard until the instrument panel warning lamps illuminate.
- Release the START/STOP button.
DRIVER EXIT
Make sure the vehicle is left in a safe condition before exiting. Failure to leave the vehicle in a safe condition may cause an accident, leading to injury or death.
To prevent the vehicle from being inadvertently left in a driveable condition, the driver exit system detects when the driver is leaving the vehicle. The system automatically switches off the vehicle when Park (P) is selected and all the following conditions exist:
- The driver’s seat belt is unbuckled.
- The driver’s door is open.
- The accelerator and brake pedals are released.
ROLLING RESTART
If the electric motor is switched off while the vehicle is moving, a rolling restart can be initiated. Select Neutral (N) and press the START/STOP button on the dashboard.
The START/STOP button is inhibited for 2 seconds after the electric motor has been switched off.
START BACKUP
The start backup procedure can be used to disarm the alarm and start the vehicle if either of the following occurs:
- The vehicle is unlocked using the emergency key blade.
- The vehicle does not detect the smart key.
The start backup feature can only be used when the instrument panel displays Place Smart Key as shown, and press the start button.
To carry out the start backup procedure:
- Position the smart key flat against the underside of the steering column.
NOTES
There are markings on the steering column to help locate the correct position. - While holding the smart key in position, firmly press the brake pedal.
- Press and release the START/STOP button on the dashboard.
Once the electric motor is enabled, a drive selection can be made, if it is safe to do so.
If the smart key is not recognized, or the electric motor fails to start, consult a retailer/authorized repairer.
IF THE VEHICLE FAILS TO START
Seek qualified assistance if the vehicle has been in a recent collision and the electric motor fails to enable when the START/STOP button is pressed. Damage to the vehicle may have occurred.
If the electric motor fails to enable, and a valid smart key is inside the vehicle, a check must be made to determine the cause. To do this:
- Enable the vehicle’s electrical system. See ENABLING THE VEHICLE’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.
- Check the instrument panel for any illuminated warning lamps and messages. Seek qualified assistance, if necessary.
- Switch off the vehicle’s electrical system.
Alternatively, if the electric motor fails to enable, the alarm system may need to be reset. To reset the alarm system, lock and unlock the vehicle.
If the electric motor still fails to enable, consult a retailer/authorized repairer.
