Towing

  1. Make sure that the Pre-Trip Checklist has been performed prior to towing (see Pre-Trip Checklist previously in this app).
  2. Make sure that tow dolly wheel lug nuts are securely tightened (see Pre-Trip Checklist #1 previously in this app).
  3. Stop and check the tie-down straps for tightness and readjust if necessary after the first 10 miles and at least every 100 miles thereafter.
  4. When towing a loaded tow dolly, always anticipate stops and brake early. Allow at least two car lengths between you and the vehicle ahead for every 10 MPH.
  5. During the tow, always remember that the tow dolly is wider than a car, truck, or RV. Drive carefully in the center of the lane. If a wheel drops off the road edge, remain off the pavement, decrease speed until both vehicles have stabilized then slowly but firmly turn back onto the pavement.
  6. When towing the loaded tow dolly, avoid sharp turns and U-turns. Turning too sharply may cause the vehicle-in-tow to come into contact with the tow dolly fender, causing damage to both vehicles. Sharp turns can also cause the carrying pan to bend upward on the sides and possibly jump the limit stops.
  7. Any swaying during tow other than minimal swaying due to road conditions may be a result of an improper load condition. To reduce the swaying, take your foot off the gas pedal. Never increase speed. Steer straight ahead and brake gently after the swaying diminishes. Check the load making sure the vehicle-in-tow is loaded properly. Check that the tongue and tongue support bar attaching bolts and nuts are properly tightened (see Pre-Trip Checklist #5 previously in this app) and check the tires on all vehicles for possible low tire pressure.
